Nestled in the elevated terrains of southern Laos lies the Bolaven Plateau, a region renowned for its rich soil and temperate climate— the ideal conditions for growing exceptional coffee. At the heart of this region is the Bolaven Plateau Coffee Producers Cooperative (CPC), a pillar of sustainable and ethical coffee production since its founding in 2007.
Origins and Mission of CPC
Established in 2007 with the support of the Lao government and the French Development Agency (AFD), the Bolaven Plateau Coffee Producers Cooperative (CPC) was formed to empower small-scale coffee farmers in southern Laos.
The primary mission of CPC is to enhance the quality of life for coffee-producing families on the Bolaven Plateau and to combat poverty in the region. To achieve this, the cooperative focuses on several key objectives:
1. Representation: Acting as the collective voice for coffee producers, CPC engages with government entities and participates in both domestic and international coffee industry forums. This ensures that the interests and concerns of its members are effectively communicated and addressed.
2. Technical Assistance: CPC provides its members with comprehensive support in coffee cultivation and processing. This includes guidance on plantation management—covering aspects such as soil fertility, pest control, and maintenance—and expertise in post-harvest processing techniques to maintain and improve coffee quality.
3. Marketing and Promotion: The cooperative aids its members in marketing their coffee, aiming to secure better prices and establish long-term relationships with international buyers. By promoting Lao high-quality coffee, CPC seeks to add value to its members’ produce and ensure sustainable income streams.
To support these objectives, CPC has developed robust infrastructure and services:
• Financial Support: Recognizing the financial challenges faced by farmers during pre-harvest periods, CPC arranges loans from international financial institutions. These funds are then distributed to members as advances based on production forecasts, helping them avoid predatory lending practices and stabilize their finances.
• Quality Control Facilities: Between 2007 and 2008, CPC established 40 collective wet processing centers equipped with modern machinery for pulping, washing, and drying coffee cherries. In 2009, a dry mill was constructed, followed by a sensory analysis laboratory and roasting unit in 2010. These facilities enable the cooperative to oversee the entire production chain, ensuring consistent quality and adding value to their coffee.
• Training and Research: In 2013, CPC inaugurated a training center dedicated to capacity-building activities for its members. Additionally, an experimental composting station was implemented to promote sustainable farming practices and improve soil health.
Through these initiatives, CPC has not only enhanced the livelihoods of its member families but also contributed significantly to the development of the Lao coffee industry, positioning the Bolaven Plateau as a recognized origin of high-quality, sustainably produced coffee.
Commitment to Quality and Sustainability
Last year, members of Cooperative Coffees (including our own CEO Tripp Pomeroy) had the amazing opportunity to see firsthand CPC’s dedication to every step of their coffee production process. This was the first time a delegation was formed to visit Lao farmers, and it proved to be a major step in strengthening our partnership with them. A highlight of the trip was a visit to lush, vibrant villages within the cooperative where the delegation was walked through washing stations, where the farmers ensure meticulous pulping, washing, and drying of coffee cherries. This rigorous approach guarantees that only the finest beans make their way to consumers. Moreover, CPC employs a sophisticated tracking system, labeling each bag with detailed information such as village origin, weight, moisture content, and processing dates. This transparency not only upholds quality but also fosters trust among buyers and consumers alike.

Flavor Profile of Lao Full City Roast
One of the standout offerings from CPC is the Lao Full City Roast, a medium-bodied coffee that captivates the palate with its nutty undertones and subtle, natural hints of vanilla and caramel. Its low acidity and subtle notes of bitter chocolate make it particularly well-suited for espresso blends, offering a rich and satisfying experience with every sip.
Why Choose CPC Coffee?
Selecting coffee from CPC is more than just a choice for exceptional flavor—it’s a vote for ethical consumption and sustainable practices. By supporting CPC, consumers contribute to:
• Fair Trade Practices: Ensuring that farmers receive equitable compensation for their hard work, fostering economic stability within the community.
• Environmental Stewardship: Promoting organic farming methods that preserve the natural ecosystem of the Bolaven Plateau.
• Community Empowerment: Bolstering initiatives that enhance the livelihoods of local farmers and their families.
