What Is Bird Friendly Certified Coffee?

Bird Friendly coffee is more than just a trendy label—it’s one of the highest standards in sustainable coffee farming. Developed by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center (SMBC), this certification ensures coffee is grown in shaded, forest-like environments that support migratory birds and other native wildlife. Even more, Bird Friendly certified plots are also certified organic, meaning they are free from harmful pesticides and synthetic fertilizers.

By protecting natural ecosystems, Bird Friendly coffee helps ensure that coffee farming contributes to, rather than detracts from, environmental health and biodiversity. It’s a win for birds, farmers, and coffee lovers alike.

Why Choose Bird Friendly Certified Coffee?

  • Preserves Critical Habitats: Coffee farms with dense tree cover mimic natural forests, offering shelter, nesting areas, and food for over 200 bird species—including many that migrate thousands of miles each year.
  • Fights Climate Change: Shade-grown coffee helps absorb carbon dioxide, reduce soil erosion, and regulate local water cycles—directly addressing environmental degradation.
  • Empowers Farmers: Bird Friendly certification includes a fair price premium, allowing farmers to invest in sustainable methods while maintaining a viable livelihood.
  • Elevates Flavor: Beans from shaded coffee plants mature slowly, resulting in richer, more complex flavor profiles that coffee connoisseurs crave.

A Georgia Story: President Carter’s Painted Bunting “Life Bird”

Bird-friendly landscapes don’t just exist in far-off places—their impact connects right here at home. In a wonderful BirdWatching feature, writer Phil Hardy recounts the day former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter saw their first Painted Bunting near Americus and Plains, Georgia. The story captures the magic and importanceof healthy habitats: vibrant birds appearing—and reappearing—where the landscape supports them.

Even better, you can hear the late President Carter tell the story himself. He recalls the moment a Painted Bunting “landed on the fence right in front of us,” and how he “quick counted seven different colors on this beautiful bird.”

BirdWatching’s article (originally published in 2012 and updated October 10, 2024) traces how local birders, including former President Carter, documented buntings in the Americus area over multiple years—an inspiring reminder that habitat quality matters both abroad and right here at home.

How Campesino Organic Coffee Supports Bird Friendly Coffee

Why Bird Friendly Certified Coffee Matters: A Brew That Supports Birds, Farmers, and the Planet 2

We are launching our first Bird Friendly Certified coffee, but this won’t be our last. While most of the farmers we work with have not chosen this certification, our partners at COMSA and Pangoa in Peru now have lots that are certified. Certifications are expensive for farmers and take a lot of extr work to document their practices. They have to choose which certifications they carry carefully. While many groups we work with are smaller and choose to focus on Fair Trade and Organic Certification, the systems that historically carry the best financial return on investment, these two co-ops have taken the plunge with BF certification and we want to support them by purchasing some of their BF certified lots.

Sourcing Responsibly

We proudly partner with sustainably farming producers and their co-ops throughout Latin America and beyond. These partnerships ensure that your coffee comes from growers who are committed to preserving native ecosystems and producing top-quality beans. Bird Friendly certification is one of the ways that they can show their commitment.

Educating Our Community

We believe informed consumers drive change. That’s why we share information about initiatives like Bird Friendly certification—through our blog, in-store signage, and events—to help customers make choices that reflect their values.

Advocating for the Planet

In addition to sourcing responsibly, we support conservation efforts through donations and collaborations with environmental organizations. Our long-standing commitment to ethical trade and biodiversity conservation means we’re always looking for ways to do more.

How You Can Support Bird Friendly Coffee

Here’s how you can help:

  1. Share the Message: Talk to friends, family, and your local café about Bird Friendly Certified coffee and other sustainability initiatives. The more people know, the more demand we create for environmentally responsible coffee.
  2. Support Local and Sustainable: Choose roasters and cafes—like Cafe Campesino—that are committed to sustainability. Your purchases fuel a positive feedback loop of responsible sourcing and environmental stewardship.
  3. Get Involved: Consider donating to organizations such as the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center or volunteering with local bird conservation efforts in your area.

Every Cup Counts

Bird Friendly Certified coffee isn’t just about protecting birds—it’s about supporting ecosystems, uplifting farming communities, and enjoying a cup of coffee you can feel truly good about. At Campesino Organic Coffee, we are honored to play a role in this movement toward a more sustainable future. While a lack of the BF certification does not mean that a coffee is grown without regard to migratory birds and their natural habitat, BF certification means that it definitely is responsible towards our feathered friends.
